Tired of Quotas, NJ Cops File Grievance Against Their Chief

Two Ocean Township, NJ, patrolmen, represented by their local Police Benevolent Association, filed grievances against their police chief after receiving negative performance reports for not meeting ticketing quotas. Their boss, Police Chief Antonio V. Amodio Jr., called them "standards" not quotas because quotas have been outlawed in NJ since 2000. The two patrolmen averaged only 3 1/2 tickets a month instead of the 10 per month "standard" the department uses to evaluate performance.

    Bad Boss.

Sometimes Cops dont always hand out tickets, and let the driver know what the problem was and what they need to do to correct it. I feel this is much more educational and beneficial to the motorist. Giving tickets to persistent offenders is good, but to the average motorist, this is negative and doesn’t achieve anything, except generate revenue for the local government.

    I agree Jim. 100%.

That is extremely well said. However i think money will always be the overiding factor, and police will be used not to protect and to serve, but to generate income, and i dont expect this to ever change.

    Couldn’t agree more with Jim.

In Belgium the cops have the same issue with alcohol tests. They have to reach certain quotas so on evenings when there’s not a lot of traffic passing the area, they’re almost “obliged” to do some tests themselves in order to get to the quota..

I agree with Jim too, but I feel 40 summons a year is a little low…. not saying that there should be a target # to hit, but when you think he writes less than 1 ticket a week that just doesn’t make sense. I mean what the heck is he doing all day at work (it is our tax $$ going to waste if they are just sitting around not working to protect and enforce)? They have in the article that their standard is 140 summons a year….. that is only writing basically 2-3 tickets a week (not unreasonable for a patrolman). That’s my $0.02.

Good for these patrol officers. Ticket “standards” used for evaluation purposes are total bullshit.

My town, like most towns, has a number of slow intersections where cars often pull up solo. Thus, local traffic will often slowly roll through these signs. People don’t blast through them, but they don’t come to a complete 3-second stop eaither.

Chiefs like this one in NJ, would force their cops to spend time hiding at little intersections like these busting good people, instead of out doing REAL police work. Ticket standards WASTE our tax dollars by forcing our police to act like assholes.

Once that starts, you’re really in trouble, because departments that HAVE to act like assholes hire cops who LIKE to act like assholes, and those people should never be allowed to carry a gun.
