Smartest Drivers are in the Midwest, Dumbest in the Northeast

Results from a nationwide survey by GMAC found that drivers in Kansas scored the highest (84%), while NJ’s drivers scored the worst (69%). Midwesterners place seven states in the top 10, while Northeasterners dominated the bottom five. Test scores also showed that men over 35 from the Midwest were most likely to pass the test ,and that, refreshingly, average test scores have gone up, albeit, one percentage point to 78.1 %. Meanwhile, in Australia, over 40,000 drivers had their licenses taken away, in part because of the doubling of fines from speed cameras and the motorists’ failure to adjust to them. In Japan, they’re not even bothering to drive anymore.

    Thanks, it’s working now. :D
VA DC being some of the most feared states by motorists in America, ranked in the bottom 11 states. Facing heavy anti-speeding enforcement, they are possibly the more dangerous drivers.

The top driving statistics are centered in areas that have less cross-pollination of cultures and driving styles. In my city you have transplant Californian’s that can’t drive in rain, cultures that don’t use turn signals etc. When there is a collision you have 4 people arguing in 4 languages – none of which grew up in the area. Not the case in most rural Midwest towns.

Nonsense. California should have been rated the dumbest and New Jersey and New York should have been much closer to the top. Anyone from the east coast who’s lived on the west coast for any length of time will know that Californians are the absolute dumbest drivers in so many ways.

This might come off as sarcastic, but I’m dead serious.

Promising trend in Japan. I have to say that I wouldn’t mind seeing a bit less cars on the road, especially in the city. Leaves room for those who actually enjoy driving and owning a car, and makes it a bit easier to find parking space, which can sometimes be kinda hard where I’m from.

3 seconds is a safe following distance under most conditions? I thought it would be 10!
    The rest was correct!

I’m actually from Kansas via Kentucky–lived in Augusta and Wichita for most of my life before leaving for greener pastures–and as I plan to drive from Louisville to Augusta for my 10-year high school reunion this fall, it’s good to know I won’t be killed by Kansas drivers. I bet if new drivers played some Gran Turismo and Forza, that score could break 90 percent in no time.

But mainly I’m just happy to see my hometown here in the most unlikely of places.

Yeah, I tell you why not to bother here in Japan. My buddie and I were heading down the express way at night about a month ago…sans radar detector. Low and behold a new speed camera. The ticket, a little over 1K dollars us. The moral here. Radar detector, never leave home with out it.
