Porsche’s 911 product chief, August Achleitner, probably should’ve checked with his company’s corporate communications director before suggesting that the GT-R’s lap time of 7:29 could only have been possible on semi-slick racing tires, rather than the tires that come stock on the vehicle. He says that Porsche bought a GT-R from the US, shipped it to Germany and then ran it on The ‘Ring just hours after running their 911 Turbo and GT-2. The best time they could get with the GT-R…
…was 7:54, while they clocked their 911 Turbo at 7:38 and the GT-2 at 7:34. All laps were done by one of Porsche’s chassis engineers who’s an expert on The ‘Ring, instead of by Walter Rohrl, a former world rally champion and current Porsche test driver.
Porsche isn’t normaly one to stir up the pot but they didn’t believe the GT-R was capable of 7:29 so they had to find out for themselves. A test by an independent company or magazine would probably help end the debate. (Source: Autospies)

So for $60,000 the GT-2 is only 4 seconds quicker than a Turbo. Wow, that’s a good deal
It was only a matter of time before a company called out Nissan. I did not believe a car so heavy, with less power could keep up with the ZR1 on the straights. Stickier tires and maybe a little boost increase could have been used and easily hidden.
The ZR1 is cheap yankee garbage.
AntiMPAAman come on don’t be jealous because the Americans finally did something better. It’s about time, some challenged that rather suspicious claim.
Porsche GT-2 for $195,000 and a Nissan GT-R for $80,000 running the same 0-60 of 3.5sec, and the Nissan beating the Porsche at The Ring!?! I don’t think it’s the tires - Porsche probably needs to go to all-wheel drive and stop trying to shave weight.
Yeah. I bet the Porsche driver tried REALLY REALLY hard in the GT-R.
@ Brent - Porsche Turbo has been AWD since 1996.
and agree with Peter “A test by an independent company or magazine would probably help end the debate.” I think it should be done as an all out battle with a factory Nissan driver and a factory Porsche driver. Then after porsche dominates that, have them do an endurance race where, I have a feeling you’d silence much of the hype around this.
I’ll give the nissan lovers that the Gt-r might be a good value and a car easier for bad drivers to drive well.
Lots of magazines have tested the GT-R in comparison to a 911 Turbo on different tracks around the world. In all cases the GT-R has been quicker. Nissan used the optional Dunlop tires for their record on the Ring.
@AntiMPAAman
I’m sure it’s “cheap yankee garbage” that will be kicking foreign car’s asses all over the roads.
Jealousy is a bitch, is it not?
