NY Times Editorial Proposes 75mph Speed Limit On Cars

"Quit building cars that can exceed the speed limit" is Op-Ed contributor, Kent Sepkowitz’s solution for decreasing fatalities. He doesn’t mention anything about improving driver skill or making the tests to get a license any more difficult. Isn’t a bad driver in a car going below the speed limit more dangerous than a good driver exceeding the limit? Speed kills when the driver is in over his head, when he doesn’t know his limits or the car’s limits. Those two skills can be taught.

Now all of those people on cell phones don’t even have to think about how fast they’re going. They can just floor it and the car will take care of the rest (as if they didn’t already treat it that way).

Communist aren’t typically smart people. I couldn’t even read the whole thing. That guy “Nuts”

This guy does not know what he is talking about, take 144A or B. The breaks on these cars are designed to be used at speeds in excess of 100mph. Have you ever see what happens when they try to stop the car from just something like 50-70? I would gladly step out in front of one of them!!!!!!!!!!

If you are going to step out in front of a car make sure it is a fast one been driven responsibly, you have a much better chance of surviving!!!!!!

I really think Kent Sepkowitz is an idiot, and making this statement proves it. I agree that the driving test(s) should be made more difficult and driver skill needs to improve. It’s my vehicle, don’t mess with what I paid for.

This article bothers me deeply. It is wrong! Speeding does not cause death. If just going down the highway at 150mph caused death, I’d have been buried thousands of times. Speed some other factor MAY cause death. You need speed differential, like speeding into a concrete wall or an oncoming bus to cause death - but even then it is not certain, and quite frankly whether you are doing 40mph or 400mph into an on coming bus you’re going to be dead either way, one will just be a more spectacular way to go. Fortunately, speeding tickets generate far too much revenue for municipalities and if you limit a car to 75 you can still speed through a school zone and kill a bunch of kids. And to call speeding an adolescent thrill, I am in my mid thirties and its still a helluva thrill. I would love to let this a-hole ride shotgun in my car as I take a few laps aruond Watkins Glen - I’d be happy to thrill him until he needed to change his drawers (which wouldn’t take more than a couple of turns).
