In an attempt to reconstruct the accident, Florida Highway Patrol investigators have pulled the on-board computer in the hopes of gathering more data. BMW’s spokesman, however, said they no longer record data as "the information was not accurate enough to reconstruct crash scenarios."

I can say what happened and also every other visitor of gumball144.com: this kid drove 300km/h and couldn’t handle it because his senses and reactions were too slow because of the alcohol!
??? What’s there to reconstruct? An overconfident 18-year-old kid stole his father’s E60 M5 for the night (claiming it was his to many on M5Board) and wanted to impress his friends at an airstrip. He misjudged the length of the airstrip and killed four of his friends as a result of his own stupidity. I’m not sure what these people are looking for, a complex 3-D reenactment with a second-by-second analysis of the situation? I hate to be blunt, but perhaps the FHP should spend more of their time using this incident to discourage other kids from the act.
aactually the car was his, a gift from his mother…also i think it was on jalopnik that i read bmw discontinued or put in a lesser unit in the e60s because in the previous m5s and m3s it wasn’t the most reliable source for reconstructing the accident
I am friends with and go to school with someone who new Josh. Trust me, anyone who is remotely interested in cars knows about it… The FHP spends plenty of time discouraging this type of thing at our school. They park the DUI cars outside, hold seminars, and do other random crap like that. But that is just the problem, to many kids, it is just getting out of class and is unimportant otherwise. There needs to be more required testing before kids can get their liscense. However, none of these things will prevent a stupid kid from doing something even dumber.
P.S. Did anyone else think it necessary to mark the location of John Travolta’s house in this diagram???

@John Anthony:
Then why was it registered under his father’s name?
Not that it matters in the scheme of things, but I find it very unlikely that his mother would go out and buy him a $85,000 car in addition to his other E60. He claimed that he had an E92 at one point, I find that much more believable than someone his age owning two E60s.
Just my $.02 though.
that’s what i read somewhere “that his mom got it for him”…if it’s registered under his father’s name; that’s prob for the insurance, same when i had my m5, it was registered under my fahters name
…it says it was his fathers{still could be the same scenario as mine}

I’d be really suprised if the Event Data Recorder in the Airbag computer didn’t store the basic crash information, but all its going to give you is a snapshot of the throttle position, speed, whether or not the brakes were applied, etc. If its like the convertibles and the SAVs, the head/ curtain airbags would have gone off when the car went airborne.
Judging by the damage, I doubt that BMW Assist got a call for help (with transmitted EDR data, possibly) from the car, and I’d also bet that it was possible that the airbag computer was destroyed in the accident.
Regardless, there is then the question of who owns the data…the police, or the family?
I’d also question which “on board computer” the FHP took, the engine computer isn’t really going to tell them much.

One aspect of this story that no one has realized is the fact that no aircraft were landing at that time. Some might say “why would anyone be landing at that time of day?” Well Travolta actually usually gets home from his Scientology happenings in Clearwater between the hours of 2am to 3am. It just so happens he went to Van Nuys, California instead of back to Jumbolair that day. I work at the airport in Clearwater where he lands and greet him every night. I didnt ask him personally what he thought of the crash but his co-pilot said he was shocked about the whole thing.
Doesn’t Travolta land 727’s or something on that runway? Also, I may be mistaken, but isn’t it the planes responsibility to ensure the runway is clear on an open airfield like that?
Hi.
It’s test. This site was probably down…
