As a side note regarding the image above... Nobody should be allowed to point anything that looks like a gun at a moving vehicle! I would like to see police forced to only use dash-mounted gear to prevent this dangerous scenario.

I've found most speed traps in states/cities/towns that you pass through to get somewhere else. Be carefull when you are an obvious out-of-state driver on a road trip because they love to nail people who will not return to defend themselves in court. Does it add safety to have this police presence? Not at all - merely bottom-line income for the local law enforcement corperation.

@Rob. Yes, obviously, the two cars are polar opposites but what I was trying show was each company's vision of the future. Chrysler will sell a lot of supercharged Challengers, but will it be enough to keep a company teetering on the brink of bankruptcy from going under? The Big Three were soo drunk off profits from their high-margin SUV's and picku-ups that they failed to keep up with what's going on in the world. With Peak Oil, climate change, and CAFE regs., we're seeing the beginning of the end of the 2nd Age of Wretched Excess or the End of the Horsepower Wars. BMW, Mercedes and Porsche admitted as much in a recent issue of CAR magazine.

I love sports cars as much as anyone, but the formula doesn't have to be 4000lbs and 600hp. That's just a waste.

Yes, Mark, he's alive but all his time is being taken up by other projects, mainly, Geotegic's work for Piaggio. When that's done, you'll see him post more regularly.

Also, look for a his appearance on Garage419 with Matt Farah early next week.

cheers,
peter

Alt Speed has it, the sooner our cars run on less gas we can build speed from their. But while that is happening we need cars like the Challenger for the few people who have the need for speed.

The VW is not a car, it's a transportation utility
as glamourous as an ashtray. But at least it does
its job pretty well.
The Challenger is an insult to the beauty of its
ancestor (see "Vanishing Point" to pay a tear)
that will most probably have a catastrophic mpg
thanks to an engine from the stone age.

In these times of ecolo-paranoia it's really not
what you do (600bhp) but the way that you do it.

Who wants to bet the guy who goes in and buys the Challenger complains non-stop about the gas prices. And to be fair the M5 isn't the most fuel efficient machine ever built, though I will admit Alex has probably put less gas in that car then an Insight from the same year. a couple of things to note about gas prices and oil company revenue
1. We've seen this before around 1980
2. if you look at the market it follows the same trend as the housing and tech bubble and we know how that ended
3. Most peoples retirement plans (401k's here) are heavily invested in energy stocks so if the price drops to $20 a barrel tomorrow you'll hear the same people who were driving an H2 and complaining about gas prices complain how they lost their retirement savings

Apples and Oranges, Peter. The Challenger is a niche vehicle. It will sell in good numbers to those who want to play while the VW is meant to please John Everyman who won't consider anything over 2.5 liters anyway.

Speaking of not thinking ahead. Our beloved BMW seems to want lighter cafe rules instead of embracing their own 2-mode hybrid system. Something hybrid from BMW could blow the Lexus LS-h out of the water.

I would say that both cars are equally relevant, but for completely different reasons.

The One Liter would be a perfect commuter vehicle. Most vehicles have only a single occupant, and something small and light would be great where efficiency and economy are king.

The Challenger, on the other hand, is the kind of vehicle you'd use on a nice weekend, just for the fun of driving.

Really, both these vehicle could grace the garage of the connoisseur (maybe alongside a full-size truck for those got-to-haul-something and a mini-van for those got-to-haul-someone moments) and that person would be justified in their choice.

Hey Alex, kind of an unrelated note, but since the book release, you seem to be running the M-Car racket, so I was wondering if you've been to Enthusiast Auto's website. Saw it yesterday in a link from bringatrailer.com and it's a ton of great BMWs for sale. Figured you might want to check it out so you can go ahead and acquire Polizei 144C through Z!

Cheers.

Oh, it's www.enthusiastauto.com, and for the record, I have nothing to do with their site, except that I'd like to spend a lot of money there.

The Prius is working at its absolute highest performance thus using its maximum amount of gas to do so. The M3 doesn't require near the amount of effort to match the Prius's top performance figures, therefore it uses much less gas.
