1981 U.S. Express Rules & Guidelines

Here’s a snippet from the one-page of rules and guidelines that was given to each of the participants in the 1981 U.S. Express. Almost jokingly - and perhaps for the sake of laibility - drivers were encouraged to comply with the laws of the state through which they travelled (speed limits excluded?). For the entire sheet, clck here.

McLaren’s Mods For The Singapore GP

Looks like McLaren hired the guys from "The Office" to shoot this short spoof about the team’s preparation for the night race in Singapore. Seems like an attempt to rid themselves of their image as a cold and humor-less team run by Ron Dennis, whom Kimi Raikkonen once described as a "control freak." You can thank Autoblog for this one.

Polizei Impound 43 Cars They Believed Were Rallying

Kinda hard to know who to believe on this one. The Sun, hardly the model of objectivity, said the group of middle-aged motorists were on a sedate European tour. The organizers, Circuit Days, out of the UK, issued a press release to say they believed the polizei acted improperly and that their Euro Enduro event is not an illegal race, it’s just a social driving event. Circuit Days also points out that the polizei have "no evidence of any speeding, careless, inconsiderate or dangerous driving by the participants." However, if you look at their website, they call themselves the organizers of the Euro Enduro "road rally events." The polizei, according to The Sun, said, "It was an illegal race."

Challenger To 31:04 Goes Public

"This is designed to be the best software to defeat that 32:07 record that now stands." Isn’t the record 31:04? In this video Mark Nicholson of EyePatch Films, introduces a software package that integrates essentially all the systems that were used in 144A, with some new additions, in an attempt to break the Roy/Maher NY-LA record by using a ‘07 BMW Z4 M Coupe. We’re not sure it’s particularly wise to announce that you’re going to break the record lest you want to invite surveillance by numerous law enforcement agencies. We’re waiting for the record-breaking announcement and the data and the toll receipts and the witnesses, etc.. BTW, Alex doesn’t believe any of this is real.

Egloff: The Lone Rider

Balls. "Cannon Ball" Baker had them for the simple reason that he set so many of his early records on a motorcycle. The man pictured here, George Egloff, had them, too. He did one Cannonball and four U.S. Express runs on a motorcycle, four of those five races he did solo. And for him, they were mere warm-ups compared to his other feats of endurance. Click here for the full story and video clips.

Polizei Seize 5 Cars Believed To Be Part Of Rally To Croatia

Some of the details are a little murky but this much is true:  German police seized a 430 Scuderia, a GT3 RS, a Cayenne, a Continental GT and an R8. One report, according to GT-Spirit, says the cars were stopped for reckless driving. Another article also adds that two of the cars were believed to have been involved in accidents, as one of the cars had dents in it. The owners of the cars (from Britain and Spain) were believed to have been entrants in a" Club GT Events" run/rally/race (semantics) from Cologne to Croatia. Not surprisingly, Club GT Events’ website isn’t functioning at the moment. The car-less drivers then had their licenses confiscated when they tried to rent high-end cars to continue onto Croatia.

Is this the begining of the end of rallies? At least in Germany and Switzerland it is.

Alex Roy on CBC’s “The Hour” with George Stroumboulopoulos!

I was a guest last night on CBC’s "The Hour", a late-night Canadian talk show hosted by former DJ/VJ George Stroumboulopoulos. About 50% less political and 80% less scripted than The Daily Show, I wish it aired south of the border, and not just because I was given free reign all day to shoot the most free-wheeling, un-censored series of interviews in Team Polizei history. The best part is, I completely forgot to mention the name of my book or Cory Welles’ movie. The main interview with George aired live last night, and the others - including my un-planned, un-scripted, un-rehearsed nine minute riff on Rendezvous - should go up on their official site within a day or two. (I sure hope my jet lag, quad-shot coffee and cold weren’t too obvious.)

For now, IE, Firefox or Safari users can watch the main interview here. Use Camino and/or Facebook? Click here.

Brock Yates and TTAC Part Ways…

Original Cannonball Run organizer, Car & Driver columnist, car industry agitator and author, Brock Yates, has left The Truth About Cars after just three editorials. The reason? Well, you can’t gather much from the brief blurb on TTAC’s website. Seems like they parted ways amicably and that Yates may be looking for another website to share his musings.
