80 in 40: On The Way to Monterey, Broadcasting Live

I’ve left New York. What started as a ten-day trip to hammer out some business with Alex turned into five weeks of sleeping on his blue velour sectional, plenty of brainstorming, a ton of new friends and adventures the wooly world of startups that I couldn’t conceive of when I boarded that eastbound redeye in Sacramento over 4th of July weekend. But come to an end it has. We’re off to Monterey in 144B. We’ve enlisted the talents of Autoblog’s resident Northern California boy, Damon Lavrinc, to handle additional driving duties. We’re also attempting to warp the poor man’s brain. We’ve never attempted a driveplan that involved meeting an airline flight before, but that’s exactly what we’ll be attempting this time when we pick up Liz Moses.

She claims that she’ll bring some much-needed sense to the proceedings, but we’re a bit curious as to how much sense anyone who hitches a ride in a fake German police car crewed by a bald man, a bearded man and a blogging man could possibly have. Nevertheless, we intend to make our trek a memorable one. We’ll be broadcasting live video from Seero, as well as putting together one of our signature maps. We’ll be ruminating on the nature of driving in today’s America, passing through hamlets large and small as we travel the entire length of Interstate 80 — from the George Washington Bridge in New York to the Bay Bridge in San Francisco, then tooling down 101 through Silicon Valley and south to Steinbeck Country — where we’ll take in the goings on during what’s internationally recognized as the most fantastic collection of automotive events in one weekend. If you call yourself a car guy and haven’t made it to Monterey, mark your calendars. And once you experience it, you’ll want to come back every year.

We’ll see you on the shores of the Pacific. Meanwhile, consider 80 in 40: NY/SF a go.

NY Auto Show Overheard, Or How Team Polizei Learned to Stop Worrying And Love The Dusty Viper

The New York International Auto Show brings together automotive enthusiasts of every stripe and level of interest. Hardy souls journeyed from as far afield as Austria, Sweden and Virginia to check out Polizei Interceptor 144B and chat about our jovial, demented brand of law enforcement. Sadly, inevitably, some folks were either ill-informed about the goings-on in the automotive world or — at the extreme end of things — complete and utter dunderheaded Ostrogoths when it came to cars, the law and life and how to live it. Of Visigoth persuasion ourselves — especially Mme. Lau — we enjoyed a few hearty chuckles at their expense. Come along, won’t you, and peruse our list of sublime, stupid, and outright head-scratch-frenzy-inducing quotes from the show after the jump.

Cops Will Soon Be Posing as Bird Watchers

It’s not the new Sony/Cannon/Olympus point-and-shoot mega megapixel camera, it’s Laser Atlanta’s SpeedLaser B radar which utilizes LIDAR technology that can give a reading in 0.3 seconds. It also includes proprietary stealth features, jammer detection and inclement weather modes. Perhaps  this will keep Mike Valentine busy for a while.

Houseboat = Worst Of All Worlds. A GPS/Radar Detector?

I’ve never understood houseboats. Bad houses, worse boats. How many seemingly congruous combo "things" have ever been as good as their separate components? TV/VCR’s? No. TV’s can last decades, yet VCRs seldom last 5 years. TV/DVD players? Same problem. SUV’s? If you want a sports car yet need a truck, even a Porsche Cayenne Turbo isn’t as good a sports car or truck as the Porsche Cayman S and Ford F-150 you could buy for the Cayenne’s $115,000+.

Nine out of ten illegal cross-country racers agree…the $400 Valentine 1 Radar/Laser Detector is El Jefe. Numerous excellent GPS units are available from Garmin, Tom Tom and Magellan starting at $200.

Before I comment on the upcoming Knight Rider remake, behold the fantabulous opening credits to the original 1982 series.

After the jump, we shall go deep into Knight Rider’s surreal genius, starting with the even more fantabulous opening credits to the 1983 season, then discuss the merciless destruction of the fondest memories of every every car loving American male between 30 and 40 years of age

Gendarmes in Subaru WRX Capture Vacationing Team Polizei! (or…The Most Surreal Polizei vs. Polizei Interaction of All Time)

8/24/2007 - "But it’s not French!" The Gendarmerie Subaru that caught us on Day Two
of the 2007 DeGrisogono Londino Transnational Automobile Tour. A closer look once at the Auxerre Police Station revealed the hood scoop of a quite-unexpected Subaru WRX.

To say Team Polizei Master Pilot Michael Ross and I were shocked would be an understatement, but our story became even more bizarre once we met the Gendarmes face-to-face. Prepare for the most surreal Team Polizei vs. Real Polizei interaction of all time…

Alex Roy On New Radar Detectors - The First Non-BS Features since 1992? Or…(Part 1)

Today Autoblog covered the release of the a new radar detector from Cobra with the first useful new feature I’ve seen since 1992 - a built-in GPS. Cobra isn’t the first to add GPS, for Beltronics and Escort’s latest models do so as well, but their new XRS-R9G rounds out GPS features among the big three US detector vendors. Interestingly, Valentine Research trusty V1 - the detector of choice among hard core drivers - does not, but Valentine, privately held by Michael Valentine (the genius behind the original Cincinnati Microwave Escort waaaaaaay back in the day), presumably remains - with but a single model in their line-up - presumably smaller than his competitors in the radar/laser detection market.

GPS functionality has grown common among UK detectors, yet although I’m convinced of its utter necessity if implemented correctly, I’m still not convinced it’s time to replace my V1.

Why?

Polizei M5 Featured in Inaugural Issue of 0-60!

A big congratulations and thanks to our old friend Brian Scotto, founder of the all-new car enthusiast magazine 0-60, whose gorgeous inaugural issue looks and feels like an American version of EVO - my long-time favorite of the UK car mags. Autoblog agrees, calling 0-60 "…a reason to wait by the mailbox again…"

Brian was kind enough to feature my Polizei M5 in the front of the first issue - with a full two-page photospread of the interior taken by master car photographer Jonathan Bushell - but you’ll have to buy it on the news-stand to see it.

I don’t often recommend subscribing to print publications, but this is one worth paying for.

Team Polizei Joins The Londino!

A generous last minute invitation received via aSmallWorld has resulted in Team Polizei’s first vacation in nearly four years…in other words, I - as in Master Piloten Michael Ross and I - will be joining the Londino. The Londino is neither a rally nor a race - it is, according to its site, an "invitation-only, transnational treasure hunt with automobiles, between London and Portofino-"

Although I’d heard of the Londino before receiving our invitation only last week, I’ve yet to meet anyone who’s participated since its inception in 2005. A Google search yielded only this one account from 2006, and this is the official blog and press release regarding our entry.

I’m sure none of the 2007 entrants, including my old friend Michael Ross, are remotely interested in the twin de Grisogono watches to be awarded the winning team. As Ross and I are on vacation, we will be participating "undercover" in an all-new, heretofore undriven-as-a-Team Polizei-interceptor Interceptor…unstickered, in outfits more comfortable than our usual fare.

Rumors suggest the Londino will depart London Thursday morning at 0900hr, with stops in northern France, Paris, Geneva, Stresa and, ultimately, the Hotel Splendido in Portofino this coming Sunday. Each stage requires the deciphering of various clues, with some as-yet unclear method of awarding points and/or prizes, none of which matters to us…of course. We’re on vacation.

We, with help from Polizei Operations Chief J.F. Musial, will be blogging both here and posting updates (and video, as possible) via FastLaneDaily. and GTSpirit.com. More to follow…
