…my E39…until it catches fire. Or explodes. Or falls into the Atlantic. I still get e-mails asking me when an E60 shall replace it. The answer is never. Here is why, or at least the first part of why, which will become apparent in the coming weeks and months.

awsome. I love the e39! long live interceptor 144
Alex,
You are right on point.
The E39 is a great value for the money right now.
Considering the new E60 M5 cost over $100,000 at some dealerships, I just can’t see spending that kind of money, even for an M5.
While were on the subject, the new M5 really IS an ugly car.
It doesn’t look like …well…..an M5.
Ok, so the E60 has 500 plus horsepower.
There aren’t too many american roads you’re going to test the top speed on. Yes, there are a few, but lets be real about this.
On Autotrader.com you can find a relatively low mileage E39 M5 for around $25- $30 grand
Plunk down another 5-6 grand for Dinan work
and there you have it.
BMW may have backed themselves into a corner with the new M5
HERES WHY,
Where are they going to go with the NEXT design ?
600 horsepower ?………..sounds nice
speed is expensive….how fast do you want to go ?
in other words…..WHO is going to anti up the SERIOUS CASH for the NEXT generation M5 ?
The base price will be at least $120 grand, if not more.
A bargain for the super rich, but there comes a point where you turn people off, if the price is prohibitive.
Most people I know WITH MONEY, will not even consider the E60. After all, your not SAVING money, the car is expensive, and complicated. Read the Top Gear review on You Tube.com
You’ll see exactly what I mean.
The video is pretty funny too.
Steve
Alex,
The E39 M5 is a great car. I’m not sold on the looks of the new E60.
Not to mention the insane price.
I can afford the E39 without having to sell a kidney in Mexico.
I don’t know if I could ever afford the New E60 M5
By the time I THINK I could, the car will be 20 years old, with 300,000 miles on the engine.
Not what I call a bargain.
So where is BMW going to go from here ?
Who is going to pay the ever increasing cost of the NEXT M5 ?
BMW are set to price themselves right out of the market.
They should throw in free psychiatric councelling for new E60 owners….just to overcome the STICKER SHOCK
Steve
I hate the look of the newer BMW’s. Besides you have spent tons of cash on that car already.
The E60 is pretty cheap in America…just $83.000! In Germany it costs $123.000!
ouch…….That’s gotta hurt
steve
$123.000? Thats a bargain!
The M5 E60 cost over $330.000 in Norway. No kidding!
I think you should consider that in 1998 $70000 were worth a lot more than today. So in fact the new M5 isn’t really more expensive then the e39 it just sounds more expensive, you call that inflation. Still I think that the e39 is more of a car then the e60 even if it is slower and not as much high-tech. It simply awakens more emotions then the new one.
Schoenen Tag noch!
