Ebury Press, a division of Random House, has released a near (if not the) final version of the UK cover of my memoir "The Driver", and I’ve got say I might even love the 60’s-style cover more than the US edition’s sleek/modern approach. I do find the tagline somewhat amusing, since those aren’t quite the words I would use in conversation to describe my story, nor the story of the myriad surreal characters I’ve met over my years driving. I’m also flattered by my near Steve McQueen-esque cover shot - he being one of my idols, if only for his staggering tough-guy role in Le Mans - I promise you this wasn’t my request, but I certainly won’t complain.
Of course, those in the rally community (especially my friends on GT Spirit) will probably question the phrase "outlaw racing world", but one of the surprises of the book is that it doesn’t only cover my participation in the Gumball 3000 and Bullrun rallies. I won’t say more, because I want to preserve the shock value of some of the stories that have heretofore never been told. Let’s just say that I’ve been entering various underground driving events since 2000, and few (if any) of them have ever been documented until now.
Harper Collins will release "The Driver" in the United States on or about the third week of October - this edition will be available to overseas readers for online ordering via Amazon, Barnes & Noble, BooksAMillion and other sites - albeit with overseas shipping charges.
Random House/Ebury Press will likely release "The Driver" in the UK in the first week of January 2008, after which I will kick off my European book tour in London. Details to follow.
I look forward to seeing all of you who’ve been so supportive these last five years - many of whom I’ve not yet met in person. I’ve got some pleasant surprises for you…

superb. an excuse to have a ‘meeting’ (drinks at the bar) in the city sometime!! I look forward to grabbing a copy of the book too…
Not too sure on the orange ’speed’ logo and I think the marketing bods think that the UK don’t know that much about you as we get an additional paragraph which includes the line ‘from ordinary guy to international outlaw driver’. Still pretty cool though.
The question is, do I give myself an un-birthday present in October (as both the wife and sprog were born in October so will get load of pressies) or wait until until January as my birthday is at the end of the Jan?
I assume the actual text is the same inside?
Please let us know when your venue dates will be for the US book tour, so I can arrange to be at one of them.
myriad…just like the interpol lyrics for slow hands
is it a NYC thing?
hehehe
I like the US cover, the colors and design is good, has more movement
The UK cover, i dont like the pics kinda stiff
what eves…
We can’t wait, and I feel worse for the wait after our last encounter @ Trafalgar Hotel.
We’ll probably go for one copy of each in this household so completely different styling to the covers goes down a treat here!
Do hope don’t miss you in UK when I’m skiing!
Whitey
ordered me a copy for my birthday a few days ago. cant wait to see whats inside!
The UK cover is great! Regardless of the designs though, you yourself in your infamy should sell a lot of copies anyway!
