Roger Bannister. Sir Edmund Hillary. Buzz Aldrin. Steve Fossett. Alois Ruf…Alex Roy?
Ignore my book tour inspired fatigue, if you can, because in yet another unbeleivably flattering turn of events, Forbes’ Jim Clash - whose prior guests include some of my greatest heroes - interviewed me for his "Life On The Edge" Adventurer Series. I’m seldom starstruck, but the privelege of sitting in the same chair once occupied by Bannister - about whom Neal Bascomb wrote a wonderful book I used as a model for "The Driver" - was awe inspiring.
We discussed "The Driver", Cory Welles’ upcoming "32 Hours 7 Minutes." After the interview Jim invited me into his office, asked me to sign one of my Team Polizei business cards, then explained a ritual asked of each guest before departing. Jim maintains a wall of such cards - as beloved as any masterwork - and shares the story of one prior card to each subsequent guest.
"You want to know my favorite card?" he beamed. "No address, or number, or title. Just a name."
"Whose is it?"
"Sir Edmund Hillary."
I glanced down at the busy card I’d just handed him.
I had a lot of growing up to do.
