Gran Turismo Winners Get To Drive Real Skyline GT-Rs

We all know people who are great drivers in the real world but can’t complete a lap in Gran Turismo. Now Nissan Europe and Sony are trying to find out if gamers can transfer their skills to the real world. Starting on June 2nd, Playstation3 owners can submit their fastest times in a 350Z on the Eiger Nordwand track. The 20 fastest drivers will be invited to compete face-to-face in July, with the three fastest invited to enroll in GT Academy in Silverstone in England using a Skyline GT-R. As this comes from Nissan Europe, no word yet on whether non-europeans will be allowed to participate.

Smartest Drivers are in the Midwest, Dumbest in the Northeast

Results from a nationwide survey by GMAC found that drivers in Kansas scored the highest (84%), while NJ’s drivers scored the worst (69%). Midwesterners place seven states in the top 10, while Northeasterners dominated the bottom five. Test scores also showed that men over 35 from the Midwest were most likely to pass the test ,and that, refreshingly, average test scores have gone up, albeit, one percentage point to 78.1 %. Meanwhile, in Australia, over 40,000 drivers had their licenses taken away, in part because of the doubling of fines from speed cameras and the motorists’ failure to adjust to them. In Japan, they’re not even bothering to drive anymore.

Math Lessons

I failed second year algebra, so maybe you can help me do the math on these recent events:  Billionaire oil tycoon, T. Boone Pickens invests a billion dollars in a wind farm.  Paul Krugman of the NY Times finally gets a copy of The End of Suburbia and then titles his editorial, Stranded in Suburbia. Oil sets record highs on a near daily basis, the IEA say a supply crunch is coming and experts predict $12/gallon. A 1993 Geo Metro goes for $7200. Peak Oil doubters think that Brazil’s recent find will save the world when in reality the technology to extract that oil hasn’t been invented yet, or that oil will drop back down to more sane prices after the speculators lose their money. What does your math add up to? Mine says we’ll soon all be riding around on these things, which actually makes the future seem quite tolerable.

31:04 In Google Maps!

Here it is. Above? The World’s Most Infamous Google kml map file, exported from Earth into Maps. (WARNING - you MUST download Google Earth in order to view the .kml file!) Entitled "Infographic & Validation (V.9)" - this is the same .kml we and Wired.com posted in October 2007 when "The Driver" was released, and shows various milestones our 31:04 Cross Country Run. Enjoy this…just a little tiny taste of what’s coming soon. Very soon, and I’m not merely talking about "32 Hours 7 Minutes"…

Former Jalopnifuhrer-Ost, Team Polizei ally, 31:04 archivist, contributor & oooold friend David Johnson’s Maserati GranTurismo piece went live last night over at MotiveMag. I could have blogged it before Damon at Autoblog and Instapundit, but that would have been kinda insidery…no?

Drive By, Anyone?

Talk about target marketing, you’ve gotta give this dealership in Butler, Missouri, some credit for knowing their customers. They’re offering a free gun to anyone who buys a new car. So, in exchange for signing your life away for 4 or 5 years of car payments, you get a gun worth a couple hundred dollars. Makes sense (in a logically-incompatible, parallel universe). We hear the gas station down the street is offering free bullets, instead of free car washes, for customers who buy more than 10 gallons of gas. Coincidentally, or not, the city of Butler saw a rapid increase of STOP signs perforated by small arms fire shortly after the dealership announced the offer. No word yet on who’s offering bullet-proof vests.

Polizei’s Master Piloten Michael Ross Rides Against Breast Cancer

Team Polizei’s Michael Ross recently rode 30 miles as an ambassador for Against Breast Cancer, a UK-based charity that funds breast cancer research. Although it wasn’t a race, it’s believed that Michael completed the ride through Oxforshire’s countryside in record time, without breaking a sweat, while raising over 1,500 Pounds for Against Breast Cancer. If you’d like to add to the funds he raised, click on here: www.justgiving.com/mrmichaelross.
